The Axon 40 Ultra might not be a device for everybody but it can be for many - most even with a few tweaks. It has some great features like a superb build quality, premium materials, an amazingly-well-hidden selfie cam, completely immersive display and fast, 65w USBPD charging. Best of all, a 65w charger, 3.5mm adapter, headphones, sim-tool, case and screen protector are all included. Even at regular MSRP its a nice package, even better with discounts! The device is as fast as any SD8G1 device should be but does get quite warm - hot even, with extended, high performance use.Having used the device for more than a month as well as the Axon 30 5G I can tell you that updates, while they "do" do them are somewhat few and far between. "US" versions of the AX40Ultra are still on Android 12 while CN versions are at least on 13 I believe. The current sanctions on ZTE likely mean updates will fall off even more for US versions.I do love the great, immersive display though and that's what really made me want this device. The large, unobstructed, bright AMOLED is a real joy to consume content on. Not quite sure about 1500nits, but it does get decently bright. It's a waterfall display(which I like) with curved edges and compared to other phones I've used the edge detection is quite good and mis-touches are a rarity. The under-display selfie cam is extremely well hidden. I really can't say I even notice or can spot it typically. Compared to the Axon 30 5G, I have to say the picture quality might be ever-so-slightly worse but it's also much more well hidden. It's perfectly fine for Zoom calls, selfies and other usual smartphone duties. If you want great shots, use one of the 64MP sensors on the back for that. The cameras on the back really are amazing and take wonderful pictures. It's camera app is also very well featured and updates have corrected most of any issues it originally had.There's no wireless charging, which I feel like it should have had being a glass-backed, premium device. I don't miss it too much because a big 5000mah battery is onboard and 65w fast-charging means a few minutes on the charger equal big gains in battery life. It's battery life is great, I can go all day on it with moderately-heavy usage. Using USB-PD charging instead of a proprietary solution means you can use many other USB-PD chargers from your laptop or other devices - fast charging or not.At $899 for the 12/256 version I'm not sure if I'd feel quite as good about it but with the recent discounts it's absolutely worth a look.Now for a few nitpicky things... why does the included screen protector have a notch in it for the selfie cam?! That's silly. I'm sure it was done for better quality images but the TPU never made any difference on the Axon 30 - I'd swap it for a regular one but it's just so well applied. Brightness can't be 1500nits, not even in auto-peak-brightness. Based on my personal judgement, I think brightness reached a peak of likely around 8 to MAYBE 900 nits which is an upgrade over the Axon 30 but not the brightest device there is. The US model really does need more US bands, if you're on T-Mobile you'll get a pretty good experience but I can't speak to any other carrier, even AT&T I think requires the device to be on it's whitelist- not just have the bands. Lastly, I miss the 6.92" display of the Axon 30, I'd love to see a true flagship with a screen that large and unobstructed. Although, 6.8" isn't too bad, either!
