So far so good with the buck converter

I used this along with a SPDT toggle switch to power my RV propane on/off electromagnetic solenoid. In one position I power the solenoid on with 12 volts. In the other position, I have the 12 volts reduced to 5 volts through this buck converter. It holds the propane switch open via the solenoid and saves me .6 amps, or over 14 AH of my battery capacity per day. The adjustment screw works, the unit is resistant to weather and it does what it is supposed to do. I mounted it to the frame with VHB tape and a tie wrap .Time will tell on longevity.

When I 1st powered this up it was ‘railed’ high. With 12v in it had 11.18 v out. I turned the adjustment pot counter clockwise (a lot) with no change. Seemed dead on arrival. I turned the adj. pot clockwise and it (eventually) began to change the output voltage. I set the voltage to 6.5 volts (what I need for my application). I then applied a variety of loads. The next time I powered it up it was at 6.66 volts. I couldn’t figure out why it shifted. Perhaps my setting pot was dirty? I went on test how efficient it was. With a 12v supply and no load it draws just 1.7 mA. As I increase the load to 1.3 Amps the output voltage dropped just 0.03 v, and its efficiency ranged from 85% to 93%. Those are very impressive numbers for an inexpensive stand alone power supply. I still haven’t pinned down the voltage shift. I let it sit for a couple of days, and the voltage remained constant. I changed the set point back to 6.5 volts and it seems to be staying constant. I don’t know what other say about the problem of the output voltage moving around, but it seems to have gone away. It is installed and working fine.

The product is a nice design with a small foot print (size) comparing to other offerings. The reason that I gave a four-star is that the first shipment received did not work at all and it appeared a defective product. I think the manufacturer has a poor quality control as many Chinese vendors do. But I put the trust on our users' review and ordered it again. It works at this time. The regulator can keep the constant voltage at whatever the pot sets regardless variations of the input voltage. I have not tested its reliability and time will tell.

I’ve been happy with other Drok products that I bought in the past. I bought this voltage converter to set up low beam/high beam functionality for the auxiliary LED lights on my dirt bike, after a previous hi/lo module failed. You need to use a 15 amp or 30 amp SPDT relay with this “manual” set-up. I used a 30 amp that I already had in my supplies. You wire the relay with NC powering the low beam through the voltage converter and NO powering the high beam at a full 12V, with the relay triggered by the high beam wire. The amperage rating on this unit is way overkill for a 3 amp circuit, but I wanted a rugged solution that wouldn’t burn out on the trail again. I set the low beam voltage to 8V with the engine running, but you can also ignore the voltage and adjust simply by light output level instead. Installation was straight forward. Note that the input ground was connected to a chassis ground and the output ground went to the lights. Relay ground goes to chassis as well. I fabricated a mounting bracket to the upper fork triple tree for a rugged mount and everything worked perfectly out of the box. Am very happy!

I used it to run a air pump that runs on 3 volts. Using a 12V Lithium Battery so it needs to be stepped down to 3 volts. Trying to dial in 3 volts was not easy. It stepped down every other voltage just fine but when it got to 3 volts it would jump 1.5 to 2 volts. Very fine adjustments allowed me to get 3.08 volts which is well in the running range of that pump but it should not have been so hard to dial it in.
