Works with Verizon. Worth the money. Lightweight. Decent pictures. Not full of bloatware.
Things to know: I had a Motorola Edge+ (2020). At the time of purchase, the Motorola was a premium phone with amazing sound and picture quality, and an incredible price! The TCL 40XL does not feel like a step down, rather a horizontal shift. If you are a Verizon customer: Pop in your sim card, wait about 5 minutes, it works. The overall experience with this phone so far is Excellent. The cons:1. Verizon's Call Filter app will not work. The phone is not provisioned for that according to the error message in the app.2. Another potential hiccup is visual voice mail: It works when I use carrier data but not when I use WiFi and carrier data together. I am still trying to figure this out, YMMV.3. The phone is NOT 5G. This is not a problem for me, but it may be for you. The 4G LTE is great.4. The phone does not "show" on the My Verizon app.The pros:1. The sound quality of my voice during phone calls, according to my friends and family is 1,000 % better with the TCL 40XL as compared to the Motorola Edge+. There are no drop-outs, my voice comes thru clearly.2. The screen brightness is impressive; I keep it at 25% for normal office/indoor use. With adaptive brightness set, I am able to see the screen when it is sunny outside. It's good.3. The fingerprint reader is AWESOME! It is better than the Motorola Edge+. The fingerprint reader responds 95% or better on the first try.4. The picture quality compares favorably, IMO.The TCL 40XL's default setting for pictures is NOT high pixel. The waffle you see in the picture, is the screen room; it seems more pronounced in the TCL 40XL high pixel photo. I think the default picture setting for the TCL 40XL compares well with the Motorola Edge + for day to day pictures.1st place: Motorola Edge+ hdr2nd place: TCL 40XL default settings3rd place: TCL 40XL high pixels5. Lack of bloat ware!!! No double apps.Special Note for Verizon Customers:Verizon sells the TCL 40 SE for $99 as a prepaid. It does not compare favorably to this phone IMO. The other options for TCL have older versions of Android, smaller batteries, and less onboard memory (if you purchase the 6/256 for $~152.00 + tax). The Verizon branded phones also have Verizon bloat, which does include a working Call Filter App. So there's that. The phone screen is a bit of a fingerprint magnet. I do not use a case at home. I also did not apply a screen protector. So far it is holding up, we'll see in a few months.I purchased this [ https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C4K9CH14/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1 ] purse/case and it works well. See the review!Overall, it seems worth the money and it works with my carrier. All in, phone and purse/case ~$175.00. tax incl.

I almost didn't buy this phone because of many bad reviews. Now I am glad I went with my gut and bought this phone! I bought the TCL 40XL with the 6gb of RAM and 256gb of ROM(hard drive so to speak). The apps all loaded and worked seamlessly after they were transferred over from my old device's backup service.

I don't know what the complaints before were based on. This is an extremely low budget phone that competes with flagship phones on size, processing power, and performance. I haven't had any delay or 'stutter' with any of my apps including YouTube or games.

One thing that is of lower quality is the images on screen because they are of slightly lower quality and a little grainy. And I do mean slightly. For the price I paid for the phone it is totally acceptable. I got the 40XL on sale, price in the very low hundreds, so I am blown away by the value I got for my money.

This phone had no problem accepting the sim card from Walmart Family Mobile, the new Verizon CDMA version, not the old Tmobile sims that they are still trying to sell to people. I saw complaints about this phone not working on a Verizon network and that if you used it for CDMA it would need provisioning, totally not true. It is a 4G phone but the phone data is very fast, calls are clear, and text messages transfer even faster than my more expensive older phone.

To summarize, the phone runs great, apps work perfectly, the service was transferred to my new phone first try without any problems, and the video quality is a little lower but totally acceptable and worth the lower cost. You get great bang for your buck and the value of the phone is terrific.
