Best-selling author Rick Riordan presents Yoon Ha Lee's second space opera inspired by Korean mythology, this time narrated by a nonbinary tiger spirit.

"With a delightful mix of Korean mythology and science fiction, Lee expands on the intriguing world of his previous novel to create another exhilarating adventure with a new precocious protagonist."--Booklist

Sebin, a young tiger spirit from the Juhwang Clan, wants nothing more than to join the Thousand World Space Forces and, like their Uncle Hwan, captain a battle cruiser someday. But when Sebin's acceptance letter finally arrives, it's accompanied by the shocking news that Hwan has been declared a traitor. Apparently the captain abandoned his duty to steal a magical artifact, the Dragon Pearl, and his whereabouts are still unknown. Sebin hopes to help clear their hero's name and restore honor to the clan.

Nothing goes according to plan, however. As soon as Sebin arrives for orientation, they are met by a special investigator named Yi and Yi's assistant, a girl named Min. Yi informs Sebin that they must immediately report to the ship
Haetae and await further instructions. Sebin finds this highly unusual, but soon all protocol is forgotten when there's an explosion on the ship, the crew is knocked out, and the communication system goes down. It's up to Sebin, three other cadets, and Yi and Min to determine who is sabotaging the battle cruiser. When Sebin is suddenly accused of collaborating with the enemy, the cadet realizes that Min is the most dangerous foe of all...

Yoon Ha Lee brilliantly turns the tables on DRAGON PEARL in another unputdownable sci-fi adventure about what honor really means.

A mythological sci-fi adventure!

A mythological sci-fi adventure!
Tiger Honor is a mythological sci-fi adventure that explores the bounds of loyalty and the complications of competing interests. The main character Sebin has to decide if their oaths to their family outweigh their dedication to the Space Force. They want to do what’s right, but the real trick is figuring out what the right thing even is.This is a follow-up to Dragon Pearl, and while you don’t necessarily need to read the first book to enjoy this one, I did sometimes find myself wishing I remembered the first book better—just because I felt like I was always on the edge of remembering something important. (You don’t get real reminders about what happened until about halfway through the book.) Still, I was able to set that aside in my mind and simply enjoy this book on its own.The book is full of action and intrigue, and it’s easy to root for Sebin as they try to sort out who the true villains are. And all of this on a spaceship. What’s more fun than that?***Disclosure: I received this book from the publisher via Rockstar Book Tours so I could provide an honest review. Synopsis: Sebin, a young tiger spirit from the Juhwang Clan, wants nothing more than to join the Thousand World Space Forces and, like their Uncle Hwan, captain a battle cruiser someday. But when Sebin's acceptance letter finally arrives, it's accompanied by the shocking news that Hwan has been declared a traitor. Sebin hopes to help clear their hero's name and restore honour to the clan.

Nothing goes according to plan, however. As soon as Sebin arrives for orientation, they are met by a special investigator named Yi and his assistant, a girl named Min. Yi informs Sebin that they must immediately report to the ship Haetae and await further instructions. Sebin finds this highly unusual, but soon all protocol is forgotten when there's an explosion on the ship, the crew is knocked out, and the communication system goes down. It's up to Sebin, three other cadets, and Yi and Min to determine who is sabotaging the battlecruiser. When Sebin is suddenly accused of collaborating with the enemy, the cadet realizes that Min is the most dangerous foe of all...

Review: This is a wonderful sequel to Dragon Pearl! I loved seeing Min again and I am excited to see how Sebin will fit into the story. The book is inspired by Chinese mythology and I loved seeing Sebin’s backstory and how his family clan is female led. The book had a great plotline and I loved seeing Sebin’s development. The character development is great. The world building is marvelous. And I can’t wait for the next book!

The only thing I didn’t like is the pacing is a bit too fast in places and I wanted more of Sebin’s inner conflict and the end scene.

Verdict: It’s great! Highly Recommend.

Instead of following the fox spirit Min around as she settles into her new life within the ranks of the Space Force, we meet Sebin, a non-binary tiger spirit whose first day as a cadet is a lot more than they bargained for.

Sebin is the exact opposite of Min. While Min flies by the seat of her pants and relies as much on luck as she does her powers of persuasion, Sebin lives for following the rules and sticking to protocol. Their military upbringing has made them vigilant. Much of Tiger Honor is an inner monologue of Sebin’s contradictory thoughts as they try to navigate their current situation. On the one hand, they’re faced with their traitorous uncle and must decide whether to align with them. On the other hand, they’re living their dream to be a part of the Space Force and don’t want to do anything to jeopardize that.

As usual with Yoon Ha Lee’s books, there are a smattering of interesting and unique characters to contend with. Most importantly, to me at least, is Yoon Ha Lee’s frequent use of pronouns for each and every one. In the Thousand Worlds, not only is the sharing of one’s pronouns commonplace, but it is always honored. And Sebin isn’t the only non-binary character in the book—there are several others, always accompanied by gender neutral language (such as “auncle”) where appropriate.

Even as an adult, this sort of inclusivity is both eye-opening and heartily welcome, but I can imagine how much a story like Tiger Honor will mean to a child struggling to understand their own identity. As more books like this hit store shelves, I hope our own world becomes a more inclusive and welcoming place.

An excellent second book in this series that could definitely be read alone, but it's also nice to know who Min is before she shows up in this book. Sebin is a young (13) tiger spirit in the ancient and powerful Juhwang Clan who wants nothing more than to follow in their famous uncle's footsteps and join the Space Forces. When they finally receive their acceptance letter into the Space Forces, it's accompanied by another letter that states the uncle was stripped of his rank and is being court-martialed. Though upset and confused, they do their duty and head to the ship they've been assigned to and that's when things get interesting.

I loved this story and had visions of Star Trek even while reading this story. I loved the diversity of characters and enjoyed how the story unfolded as Sebin and their fellow cadets worked together to figure out what was going on. There were many sides to this conflict and I really enjoyed every part of this story. I am hoping there will be many more episodes in this world. It's a wonderful mix of Korean mythology and science fiction and I appreciate all the research the author put into it.

I highly recommend this series for those looking for more diversity in their stories, as well as those who just enjoy a good middle school science fiction story. This story is good for adults as well as kids!

I received an advance review copy from NetGalley for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I really enjoyed Dragon Pearl, the first book in this series, and this new entry is just as entertaining. Yoon Ha Lee brings a science fiction feel to a Rick Riordan Presents book in a unique way, and I adore the exploration of mythology. I would gladly recommend this one and hope there’s another chapter to come.
